Ledger unveiled Atom on Oct. 15, a data-connected Android device that runs everyday apps and adds a separate hardware-protected mode for crypto approvals. The company announced it at its Op3n event in Paris, pitching it as a way to combine phone-like convenience with Ledger wallet security.
Ledger says Atom will run Android apps alongside Ledger OS, its operating system for protecting keys and approving actions. A Ledger announcement says the device includes a secure chip and screen, plus a physical switch to cut power to its camera and microphone.
How will Atom handle apps and crypto approvals?
Everyday apps run in one mode, while sensitive actions move to Secure Mode, where Ledger OS controls the screen. A secure element—a dedicated security chip—holds private keys and handles approvals. Ledger says users will review crypto actions on that screen before they are signed.
Ledger also plans to preload Solana Mobile’s Seeker app, which combines its wallet and app store. The company says Atom will support its Agent Intent system, which lets users review transactions proposed by AI agents without giving those agents access to private keys.
What does the launch have to do with wallet tampering?
The launch comes as Ledger investigates modified wallets distributed through CryptoBilis, a reseller in Southeast Asia. The Block reports that Ledger says an implant in affected devices could capture recovery phrases during setup. Onchain researchers have linked the incident to more than $86 million in suspected losses, though Ledger has not confirmed that total.
Ledger says Atom will add tamper sensors to detect attempts to open the device or remove its screen. The Block reports that Ledger plans to sell it through its own website, rather than third-party resellers.
When will Atom arrive, and is it a phone?
Ledger says Atom is still in development and estimates delivery in the second quarter of 2027. Its Founders Edition has a stated reserve price of $849, with a fully refundable $100 deposit. Ledger says the price and specifications may change before launch.
Despite its phone-like apps and 4G/5G data connection, Atom is not a conventional smartphone: Ledger says it does not support cellular calls or SMS. Calls through internet apps may work over data or Wi-Fi, but the company says the device cannot call emergency services.
