USDT0 Gives Stellar a Route to USDT, Not Instant Depth
USDT0 gives Stellar native access to USDT liquidity, but its value depends on route costs, exchange depth and demand beyond launch integrations.
USDT0 is now live on Stellar as a native issued asset connected to USDT locked on Ethereum, giving payment firms and traders a burn-and-mint route across more than two dozen networks without stocking a separate wrapped token on each chain. That changes the plumbing, not the economics: Stellar can settle local transfers in about five seconds for sub-cent fees, while cross-chain movement still incurs source-chain gas and LayerZero messaging costs and can take minutes or hours depending on the origin.
How does USDT0 move USDT liquidity onto Stellar?
USDT0 uses LayerZero’s Omnichain Fungible Token standard to maintain one supply across connected networks. USDT entering through Ethereum is locked in an adapter before USDT0 is minted on the destination; movement between other supported chains burns tokens at the source and mints the corresponding amount at the destination. On Stellar, recipients need a USDT0 trustline before funds can arrive, while smart contracts interact through the asset’s Stellar Asset Contract. Cross-chain amounts normalize to six decimal places even though Stellar assets support seven, leaving sub-six-decimal precision behind as refunded dust.

- Wallets and exchanges choose whether to route through the OFT system or execute a local swap, giving integrated venues control over access and execution.
- Market makers supply local USDT0 pairs and carry inventory, spread and rebalancing risk that the unified supply does not remove.
- Issuers and messaging operators control the backing adapter and verification path; holders inherit contract, messaging and issuer-control exposure.
Is USDT0 cheaper than moving USDC through Circle CCTP?
USDT0 is cheaper only when its route cost is below the conversion cost avoided by keeping the payment in USDT. Most USDT0 routes charge no protocol fee, while routes that do can charge 0.03%, or three basis points, before source gas and the LayerZero message. Circle’s competing CCTP design burns native USDC on one network and mints it on another; standard transfers have no protocol fee, while fast transfers range from zero to 14 basis points. CCTP can therefore be the cleaner route for USDC-denominated counterparties, but it forces a USDC-to-USDT trade when the receiver wants Tether, transferring spread and inventory costs to the user or market maker.
Does unified USDT supply guarantee deep Stellar liquidity?
No: unified supply removes separate bridge representations, but it does not guarantee tight spreads, large fills or fiat redemption capacity on Stellar. Kraken, SushiSwap, Fireblocks and several wallets provide launch-day distribution, yet order-book and pool depth must still develop locally. The reported $100 billion transferred by USDT0 across 29 ecosystems since January 2025 demonstrates that the mechanism works at scale, but cumulative cross-chain volume cannot distinguish repeated treasury routing or incentive-funded loops from durable payment demand.
Payment providers serving USDT-heavy corridors should integrate USDT0 alongside USDC rather than subsidize a USDT0-only pool or treat Tether’s total supply as available Stellar liquidity. Routing should compare the delivered amount, completion estimate and local exit spread for every transfer; lending markets should initially cap exposure because the Stellar asset supports revocation and clawback. That judgment would change if 90 days of unincentivized data showed USDT0 producing the lowest delivered cost for at least 80% of target-corridor volume while maintaining reliable fills and repeat usage.
